December 17 – Lesson Learned. What was the best thing you learned about yourself this past year? And how will you apply that lesson going forward?
I have fleet feet, that’s what I’ve learned.
They work — they run. They can carry me far, far away. New York Road Runners has me pegged at 94.6 miles, but that’s only the number of miles for races run through that organization. I’ve run two other marathons this year, not through Road Runners; countless half-marathons; dozens of other road races; logged hundreds of training miles.
I will not always be able to run — this I’ve accepted. I am a recovering anorexic; a rheumatoid arthritis patient. My bones are brittle and my joints are bad. The odds are not in my favor. In fact, I’ve had four knee surgeries to date. The odds were not in my favor for marathon #1, let alone marathon #4.
But for now…I run.
And I have learned that I can do it; I can make it; I can finish what I’ve started. What was once a frail wreck of bones and skin is now a workinglivingbreathing mass of muscle and sinew and bone and flesh, all working together in time to carry me through from start-to-end.
